📋 The short version (plain language)

  • We do not collect personal information from children under 13 without verified parental consent.
  • Student profiles created in the app are stored locally on your device — not on our servers.
  • We never sell, rent, or share student data with third parties for advertising.
  • Teachers who use the dashboard agree to our Educator Terms, which align with FERPA requirements.
  • You can request deletion of any account data at any time by emailing us.

1. Who We Are

ReadQuest Kids ("we," "us," or "our") is an educational reading application designed for children in Kindergarten through Grade 2 (ages 4–8). We are committed to protecting the privacy of children and complying with applicable laws, including the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

2. What Information We Collect

Student profiles (child-facing app): When a child or parent creates a profile, we store a display name, chosen avatar, age, and reading progress data. This data is stored locally on the device and is not transmitted to our servers unless a teacher account is linked.

Teacher/parent accounts: When educators or parents create an account, we collect an email address and name for authentication. We use this only for account management and product communications.

Usage data: We collect anonymized, aggregated usage analytics (e.g., which worlds are most popular) to improve the product. This data cannot be linked back to any individual child.

What we do NOT collect: We do not collect photographs, precise geolocation, device identifiers linked to children, or any data used for behavioral advertising.

3. COPPA Compliance

Children under 13: ReadQuest Kids is designed for use under adult supervision. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent.

School-based use: When ReadQuest is used in a school setting, the school (acting as the operator under COPPA's school exception) provides consent on behalf of parents for educational purposes only. Data collected in this context is used solely to provide and improve the educational service.

Parental rights: Parents may at any time review, request deletion of, or refuse further collection of their child's personal information by contacting us at readquestkids@gmail.com.

4. FERPA Compliance

When ReadQuest Kids is used in a school context, student education records are protected under FERPA. We act as a "school official" with a legitimate educational interest in accessing student data, solely to provide the educational service.

We do not:

  • Disclose education records to third parties without proper consent
  • Use student data for targeted advertising
  • Build profiles on students beyond what's needed for the educational service
  • Retain data beyond the period needed to provide the service

Educators and schools retain ownership and control of all student education records.

5. Data Retention & Deletion

Local profiles on a device are retained until the user deletes them from the app or clears their browser/app storage.

Teacher account data and linked class records are retained for the duration of the active subscription plus 90 days. Upon account cancellation, all personal data is deleted within 30 days.

To request deletion: Email readquestkids@gmail.com with "Data Deletion Request" in the subject line. We will confirm deletion within 10 business days.

6. Security

We use industry-standard security measures including HTTPS encryption for all data in transit and secure, access-controlled infrastructure for any server-side data. We do not store payment information — payments are handled by PCI-compliant third-party processors.

7. Changes & Contact

We may update this policy as the product evolves. Material changes will be notified via email (for account holders) or a prominent in-app notice. The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent update.
